What is the DOT Physical?

The DOT (Department of Transportation) Physical is required for all CMV (commercial motor vehicle) certifications. It must be performed by a licensed medical examiner (which includes, but is not limited to, MDs, DOs, PAs, APNs, and DCs). The easiest way to find a proper medical examiner for your DOT physical is through your primary care provider.

You can also go through the NATS employment services which can give you the name of local Maryland area examiners that special in the physical.

Elements of your DOT physical:

  • 20/40 correctable vision is needed in each eye, though glasses or contact lenses are permitted.
  • Diabetics that are on needle-injected insulin are not permitted; however, diabetes controlled through a diet or oral medication is ok.
  • Blood pressure must be under 160/100. Using prescription medication to control your blood pressure is permitted.
  • Blood sugar level must be under 200.
  • Being on a Schedule 1 drug, amphetamine, narcotic or any other habit forming drug is, unsurprisingly, prohibited.
  • Being diagnosed with cardiac insufficiency, collapse, congestive cardiac failure or any other cardiovascular disease will require you to provide the Medical Examiner with a stress test (needs to be performed within the last 12 months) along with a signed statement from your doctor releasing you to drive a commercial motor vehicle without restrictions.

Job Prospects for CDL School Graduates

The job and salary outlook for certified graduates from professional CDL schools is considered by the BLS (bureau of labor statistics) to be very good.

There is a significant need to have reliable, qualified drivers to transport merchandises across the country, especially from the Maryland area.

They take goods from eastern ports through the quickly expanding commercial centers in the Midwest.

"When I lost my job in June, I was SOL.

I'm not cut out for traditional colleges, and I had no idea what I could do.

I was sleeping on my mom's couch.

I found out about NATS trucker program, got my CDL, and even got help finding a doctor for my DOT physical!

Thanks North American Trade Schools!"
