What Maintenance Mechanics and Engineers and Building Superintendents Need to Know

If you receive machine training and earn your industrial skills diploma, you'll be able to land an entry-level position as a maintenance mechanic, engineer or even building superintendent.

What will you be doing in these positions (that is, what do maintenance mechanics need to know)?

As a maintenance mechanic and engineer, you'll repair, program and maintain heavy equipment that industrial and manufacturing settings use.

Building superintendents are responsible for the maintenance of residential, commercial or industrial buildings. They do so by using a wide range of mechanical and practical skills to ensure everything with moving parts is operating exactly the way it should.

Earning the Salary You Deserve

If you want a more rewarding career, then you've come to the right page. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly earnings for "general" maintenance workers were $16.21 in May 2008. "The middle 50 percent earned between $12.44 and $21.09," according to the BLS, and "the highest 10 percent earned more than $25.94."

Understandably, the type of industry in which you work has an effect on your earnings. According to the BLS, those maintenance mechanics who work for a government entity earn the most per hour ($17.11/hr.), followed by those with machine training who work in elementary/secondary schools ($16.86/hr).

Job Outlook for Maintenance Mechanics and Building Superintendents

The BLS reports that the job outlook for those with industrial skills training "should be excellent."

And, should you graduate with a certificate from an industrial maintenance program such as ours, the BLS says your job prospects should be even better: "[t]hose who obtain certification will also face excellent opportunities."

Job growth is expected to increase by 11 percent between 2008 and 2018, the BLS adds.
