Personal Protective Equipment to Keep You in One Piece

Every welder should be familiar with personal protective equipment (PPE).

PPE is the clothing used to cover any exposed skin from flying sparks and hot metals.

  • Eyes/Head - A welding helmet with a filtered lens must be worn to protect your eyes from flying sparks and UV rays that can cause blindness. The helmet should cover your entire head and face.

  • Body - Wearing fire resistant clothing that covers your entire body is essential. There should be long sleeves to cover your arms, a collar to cover your neck, and the shirt should be worn over your pants. An apron should also be used over top of your clothing for maximum protection.

  • Hands/Feet - Your hands will be the part of your body closest to the welding tools, so it is crucial to wear gloves that will protect you from high temperatures and flying sparks and metals. Safety shoes should also be worn to protect your feet from hot materials and to prevent you from slipping.

Safeguard the Welding Area

Before you begin a weld, you should always make sure that the area you are working in is properly ventilated and made firesafe.

  • Ventilation - Welding work should always be performed in an outdoor or well ventilated area. The fumes from welding are toxic, so making sure that you won't be breathing them in is very important.

  • Fire Prevention - There are flying sparks and hot pieces of metal that could potentially ignite anything in the surrounding area. Make sure that you have plenty of area to operate and the ground is made from a fire resistant material.

Maryland Welding Safety Basics

Here are some additional safety tips to always keep in mind for all welding jobs:

  • Have a well stocked first aid kit nearby

  • Have a working fire extinguisher or bucket of sand to douse any flames

  • Always make sure the welder is grounded

MIG Welding and TIG Welding Safety

  • Arc Rays“ - Arc rays, the flame from the welding torch, can burn your eyes and damage your skin. You should always make sure that others nearby will not be directly looking at the flash, glare, and sparks while you're welding.

  • Electric Shock“ - An electrical shock can be fatal, so make sure that weld is grounded and that your gloves are insulated to protect against shocks.

  • Fumes“ - Keep your head out of the fumes and make sure that the welding area is well ventilated.

  • Gas Buildup - Shut off the shielding gas supply when it's not in use and avoid working in confined areas.

  • Welding Wire (MIG Only)“ - Keep your hands away from the gun tip when the trigger is pressed.
